Jun. 6–Throughout history, erotic dancers have exuded a mystique, as if their tease held the secret to good sex.
That secret may be out.
At studios from Los Angeles to Miami, the strip tease is being taught in exercise classes to everyday housewives, mothers and grandmothers. Hundreds of women are signing up for the so-called “fertility goddess” classes, with one North Miami Beach studio saying it teaches between 300 and 400 women a week.
The women’s aim: to get in shape, arouse the desire from within and wow their loved ones with their newfound erotic aura.
“I feel so much more comfortable with my body. You feel sexy and proud to be a woman,” says Sarah Oswald, 27, a dedicated pole dancing student.
“Let me just say this, if you’re in a relationship and you don’t want to have children, [then] get on birth control, because you’re going to become very confident,” says Susan Hilferty, 38, owner of the recently opened Pole Fitness studio in Coconut Grove. “I’m just bringing the animal out of you.”
The tigresses have long been pussycats, thanks to the demands of work, stress and parenthood.
“The first thing that goes when you become a mother is your sense of self,” says Susie Taylor, 32, a pole dance instructor. “Something we love to say is that you have to nurture yourself so you can nurture others. As women, we sacrifice ourselves and we’re taught that it’s acceptable.”
Local real estate agent Larc Abrahams, 35, mother of two, is among the women who put down the “to-do” list for two hours a week to rediscover confidence and sexuality by swinging from an 11 1/2-foot pole.
“Let me tell you, flexibility and being limber is definitely a plus when you have an 8-year-old and a 1 1/2-year-old, and they’re running in all directions,” Abrahams says, laughing.
The pop culture machine has picked up on the trend:
— On TV: Desperate Housewives’ Teri Hatcher showed off some pole-dancing moves on Oprah and so did comedian Kevin James on The King of Queens.
— The Internet: Numerous websites sell poles for at-home installation.
— Videos: Sex symbol Carmen Electra shows audiences at home how to lap dance and more through the five volumes of her strip aerobics video collection, Carmen Electra’s Aerobic Striptease Collection.
— Books, T-shirts and workshops: Sheila Kelly, author of The S Factor, owns seven studios from Orange County to New York and tours the country, giving workshops from Houston to The Hamptons. Her website sells T-shirts, G-strings and hot shorts.
The concept — self-discovery through a dance synonymous with strippers and sweaty, crumpled dollar bills — is a turnoff to some skeptics.
“I’ve seen the ads for it,” says Sandra Rodriguez, 33. “These women are acting like strippers. How is that going to make them feel better about themselves?”
Rodriguez says she’ll stick to jogging and weight training to keep in shape, thank you. But supporters of the sexy classes say the students are getting emotional rewards, as well as physical ones.
“It’s a sexy, sensual playground for women only, where you can stop apologizing,” says an instructor,  and shows how to bounce up and down on her knees with pelvis thrust forward to show the women a move called The Cowgirl. The women laugh, swing their arms in the air as if whipping around a lasso — strengthening their quadriceps in the process.
First-timer Megan Martinez, 21, peeked cautiously out of one eye — many women pole dance with their eyes closed to internalize the movements — before gingerly extending her arm into full rope swings.
Martinez has mastered The Bad Kitty, a floor move in which a woman starts on all fours, slinks down with her head turned to the side and, once her chest reaches the floor, slides forward with butt firmly in the air. It’s quite a workout.
“If you’re in a room with men, there’s no way that you can deal with your sexuality,” Taylor says. “This is one time in your life that it’s not about a guy judging you.”
Besides, where else can a group of ladies comfortably stretch out their legs and shout, “Hello, crotch?”

Working Out Never Has Been so Sexy: Susan Hilferty Aims to Boost Women’s Self-Esteem With a New Pole Dancing Studio in Coconut Grove

May 28–Though she is a straight-laced pharmaceuticals rep during the day, Susan Hilferty is a dancer at heart. A graduate of the School of American Ballet, she sees music and choreography in ordinary movements.
But three years ago the choreography ideas stopped flowing for the 38-year-old former Miami Heat dancer. A bad breakup with her then fiance slashed Hilferty’s self-esteem as well as her passion for dance, she said.
That is, until she discovered pole dancing — sans the nudity.
“Once I started learning more and more about pole dancing as an art, I realized that while I was going through that rough time in my life I had stopped listening to music and stopped doing the things I loved,” said Hilferty, who recently opened her own studio in Coconut Grove. “So often, women are put down by our society. I want my studio to be a haven for them, a place where their confidence just blossoms and women help other women.”
The fitness trend first sparked by actress Sheila Kelley, who in 2001 opened a studio called The S-Factor in California, inspired Hilferty when she saw it featured on Oprah in 2003. The idea of toning one’s body with the Pilates, yoga and ballet aspects of the erotic dance form while tapping into one’s sensuality fascinated Hilferty.
Soon after seeing the show, she traveled to the West Coast to take classes at Kelley’s studio. She completed her certification with Fawnia Mondey, a Canadian actress and fitness model who popularized pole dancing as a sport in Canada.
Now nearly a month into working as a pharmaceuticals rep and teaching pole dancing by night at her Pole Fitness Studio, Hilferty said she hopes to help pole dancing shed its seedy stigma and gain momentum as an exercise.
She also hopes the studio, which is tucked in a small strip mall above a coin laundry along Southwest 28th Street and Bird Road, strengthens women’s self-esteem along with their muscles.
“I want it to be therapeutic for women so that they can feel happy about themselves and realize that they are beautiful just how God made them,” said Hilferty, who lives in Bal Harbour. “This is about health and feeling empowered by discovering your sensuality; this is not about taking your clothes off and learning how to be a stripper.”
Currently, the studio offers six divisions starting from the beginner’s level called Flirting, to Goddess, where accomplished dancers master several routines and gear up for a private performance. Each level consists of a 90-minute class once a week for six weeks and costs about $270.
On a recent visit, the Flirting class began with about 15 minutes of stretching on Pilates mats followed by floor exercises.
For one known as the “bad kitty,” the six women were told to lie on the floor on their stomachs, bend their knees and lift their legs in the air while arching and lowering their backs and nipping the floor with their heads like a purring kitten.
Hilferty then showed the women a routine in pieces by having them dance around the shiny black poles, leaning their hips away from it and stepping forward in a slow trot as if they were scraping the polish off their toes. More choreography followed, including a move where the women rubbed their bums and gave it a playful spank while watching themselves in one mirrored wall.
As they pulled this move off, Hilferty corrected each woman’s techniques, made jokes and gave them positive feedback.
“I work out a lot so I’m always looking for something new and different to give me an extra push,” said first-time student Joan Cartuccio of Miami. “Besides, I’ve been married 20 years so I need all the help I can get.”
Hilferty, a University of Miami graduate, is enjoying her new business venture.
“I always knew I’d have a ballet bar in my life,” Hilferty said, smiling. “I just didn’t know it would be vertical.”

You are amazing…I hope you realize that! I also want to thank you for changing my life in a positive way. Since I have been taking class the obvious advantage has been my weight loss. The less obvious is that I am even more determined to master this and own being a vixen! ;-) Of all the exercises programs I have tried in the last 15 years..this is the ONLY one that has kept me interested and allowed me to have so much fun and meet such amazing women such as yourself. Thank you from the bottom of my heart and the tips of my shoes! ~Keri

My first introduction to pole dancing was at a girlfriends party. I had such a great time, not only was my body sore from getting a great work out but, my face hurt from laughing so hard! It was so fun for us girls to get together and be silly, sexy, and get a great workout! I had so much fun I scheduled my own party. Some of my girlfriends are very athletic and some had questions regarding a weight limit on the pole. All of them had a great time and wanted more! Some were better at trying different tricks on the bar like we were back on the play ground in elementary school and others were better at making each move look sensual. We all got a great work out and had a blast! A few of us are now in the weekly classes and we are all dropping weight!! On another note, my husband and I have been "playing" a lot more. I feel more sensual and I think for him, just the thought of me going to these classes has "inspired" him more too! It’s a win/win for us!! ~Kirsten

Love the new classy location in Coral Gables! Never thought pole dancing could be so graceful and FUN! After just 3 pole sessions, my legs and abs are getting stronger and looking better. I literally can’t wait for the next lesson and find myself mentally rehearsing to each song I hear during the day! I highly recommend Pole Fitness Studio Miami for any age and fitness level.~Nannette H.

This is great for any age, not only does it boost your self esteem and confidence but it is a kick ass work out. I haven’t had so much fun plus meeting such great people. ~Heidi

I signed up for the 5 week class and now I am hooked! I never thought I could learn so many ways to be sexy and confident with myself. I thought that there is no way that I am going to be able to pull this off, but by then end of the class I learned a whole routine, I amazed myself. I find myself talking about your classes all the time to co-workers, family, and friends, encouraging all of them that they can be sexy too and feel great doing it. I was a little embarrassed the first class thinking that all the women there were going to be tiny girls with perfectly toned bodies. I soon found out that you welcome all women no matter the age, shape, or size. I believe that is why I keep going back and the fact that this studio and teachers are my new idol, They are so inspirational and motivating. If you are thinking about taking a class…..do it!!!! You won’t regret it!! Thank you Susan for bringing the inner Goddess out in me!! Kimberly

I did the 5 week session in South Beach and LOVED it! Pole Dancing is done very tastefully and its all about letting your inner goddess out with no one else giving judgement. All the ladies just have fun with the class and help one another out if you get stuck on learning a new move. I found it to be a great source of exercise that can tone your legs, butt, and arms. Other people also took notice and asked what exercise regime do I use. I look forward to returning again, I highly recommend every women at least try out one class. Stephanie C.

Well first off thank you for being so polite and courteous with her. When she came home she had an awesome glow about her and she couldn’t stop with the compliments of your class. Just personally I think it is awesome for a woman, like my wife, to get out of the box for a bit, have some fun, and most of all feel sexy. She is extremely happy and is having fun. I have not seen her like this in a long time, and trust me she deserves it!!! So from me to you…THANK YOU~ Ryan (husband of new student)

I decided to give it a try by myself and I’ve been attending classes for almost 10 months! The workout is wonderful - focusing on the core and upper body strength - areas that I needed concentration on! The atmosphere of the class itself is 90% of the reason to attend! The instructors are wonderful. They are encouraging and work with your strengths to help you achieve a new moves and raised confidence. The ladies in the class work together, encouraging you and celebrating each success - and believe me - when you finally nail that spin that you just can’t seem to get… it is a success! The confidence I’ve gained from Pole Dancing has also worked it’s way into my daily life - I feel stronger and sexier - and neither are a bad thing to feel! D~

I have been a regular student at pole fitness Miami since the end of last summer. I had always worked out and tried to stay in shape, however, workouts at the age of 30 had become a chore and something to be dreaded. I went out on a limb and signed up for 20 class package and even attended class by myself, not knowing a single person. I LOVED it!! The instructors are amazing and they create such a safe and comfortable environment each class. I have learned so much since my first class and it has become a true addiction and new found love. Pole dancing has boosted my self esteem and it makes me feel good about my body that I have always been so hard on. I am doing inversions on the pole now that I never thought I could accomplish. I have come to love the girls that attend and the awesome instructors. I have never felt uncomfortable or embarrassed in class. Everyone is so encouraging and uplifting. Pole dancing will ALWAYS now be a part of my life!!! It is a hard core workout and I wake up sore after every class. Hard to believe that I FINALLY found something that I enjoy so much and that gives me a hard workout at the same time. Every women should experience pole dancing! ~ Carrie

‘Pole dancing’ ejercicio y sensualidad- El Nuevo Herald

Especial/El Nuevo Herald

“He tonificado mucho mi cuerpo”, explica Carinne Tator. “Por ejemplo, ahora es más flexible. He desarrollado músculos que no tenía.
